Santa Croce Church

Accademia

Recommended Visit Duration

Quick visit: 45–60 minutes (focus on Michelangelo)
    Standard visit: 1–1.5 hours (recommended)
    Relaxed / detailed: 1.5–2 hours

Suggested Route (1–1.5 hours)

Hall of the Colossus (5–10 min)
Start here after entering. Look at the large plaster casts and early works.
Hall of the Prisoners (Galleria dei Prigioni) (15–20 min)
Michelangelo’s four unfinished Prisoners/Slaves (Atlas, Bearded, Young, and Awakening). These dramatically show his “non-finito” technique — figures emerging from the marble. Also see the unfinished Saint Matthew.
The Tribune (Tribuna del David) (20–30 min)
The highlight: Michelangelo’s David (1501–1504). Walk around the entire statue to appreciate the anatomy, expression, and details from every angle. This is the original marble (a copy stands in Piazza della Signoria).
    Gipsoteca Bartolini (optional, 10 min)
Collection of 19th-century plaster casts — interesting if you have extra time.
    Musical Instruments Collection (10–15 min)
Historic instruments from the Medici and Lorraine collections, including rare pieces (some linked to Stradivari and early pianos).
    Painting Galleries (10–15 min)
Works by Florentine masters from the 13th–16th centuries (Botticelli, Perugino, Filippino Lippi, etc.). These are secondary for most visitors but worth a quick look.
