2-Day Rome Itinerary
Two full days in Rome lets you cover the absolute must-sees without feeling
completely rushed, as long as you book the two biggest tickets in advance.
Day 1: Ancient Rome + Historic Center
Morning
Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Start as early as possible (first entry slot is ideal).
One combined ticket covers all three.
Allow 3–4 hours total. The Forum and Palatine Hill are often more atmospheric than
the Colosseum itself.
Afternoon
Walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali toward the center.
Pantheon – Still one of the most impressive buildings in the world (small entry
fee + timed slot required).
Piazza Navona – Beautiful Baroque square with Bernini’s fountains.
Trevi Fountain – Toss a coin over your left shoulder.
Optional: Spanish Steps if energy allows.
Evening
Dinner in Trastevere or the nearby Monti neighborhood.
Classic Roman dishes: carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana, or supplì.
Day 2: Vatican + Centro Storico
Morning
Vatican Museums + Sistine Chapel
Book the earliest possible timed entry.
Focus on the highlights: Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms, and the Sistine Chapel.
Allow 2.5–3.5 hours.
Continue into St. Peter’s Basilica (free entry, separate security line).
Optional but highly recommended: climb the dome for panoramic views of Rome.
Afternoon
Cross the Tiber (or take a short walk/bus) back into the historic center.
Explore any spots you missed on Day 1 (Campo de’ Fiori, more of the centro storico,
or Castel Sant’Angelo if interested).
Gelato and café stops are highly encouraged.
Evening
Another dinner in Trastevere, or stay in the center near Piazza Navona / Campo de’ Fiori.
Optional sunset views from the Gianicolo (Janiculum) Hill.
Practical Tips
Must-book tickets:
Colosseum + Forum + Palatine (timed entry)
Vatican Museums (timed entry)
Book both as soon as you have fixed dates — they sell out, especially in high season.
Getting around: Central Rome is very walkable. Use the Metro or buses for the Vatican
if needed. A 48-hour public transport pass is convenient.
Pace: Both major sites (Colosseum complex and Vatican) take significant time.
Don’t try to add too many extras.
Food tip: Avoid restaurants right next to the big monuments for better quality
and prices.
Best order: Most people prefer Ancient Rome on Day 1 and the Vatican on Day 2,
but you can reverse them if ticket times require it.
