Detailed 2–3 Hour Highlights Itinerary
National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) Here’s a practical room-by-room route focused on the absolute must-sees: 1. Ground Floor – Farnese Collection (40–50 minutes) Start here right after entering. Walk through the sequence of rooms surrounding the courtyards. Must-see works**: Farnese Hercules (the massive, exhausted hero leaning on his club) Farnese Bull (Toro Farnese) – the largest surviving ancient sculptural group Other major pieces: Farnese Flora, various emperors’ busts, and large mythological statues Take your time in these grand halls — the scale of the sculptures is impressive. 2. Mezzanine / First Floor – Mosaics (35–45 minutes) Go up the main staircase to the mezzanine level (easy to miss if you’re not looking for it). Mosaic galleries** (especially rooms related to the House of the Faun) Highlight: **Alexander Mosaic (Battle of Issus / Alexander vs Darius) — one of the most important mosaics from antiquity Other fine mosaics of animals, theatrical scenes, and geometric patterns from Pompeii and Herculaneum 3. Secret Cabinet – Gabinetto Segreto (15–20 minutes) Located on the same level as the mosaics (often Room 65 or nearby). Collection of erotic art, frescoes, and objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Note: Sometimes the door is closed and you need to ask staff for access. Adults only (or with adult supervision). 4. Second Floor – Frescoes & Daily Life from Pompeii/Herculaneum (40–50 minutes) Continue upstairs. Frescoes galleries** (Rooms roughly 67–78 area): Beautiful wall paintings including the famous “Flora” from Stabiae, portraits, mythological scenes, and garden frescoes. Temple of Isis** rooms Objects of daily life (kitchenware, furniture, jewelry, glass, etc.) Large model of Pompeii (Plastico di Pompei) if time allows 5. Flex Time / Exit (remaining time) Revisit any favorite pieces. Quick look at the Egyptian collection in the basement only if you still have energy and interest. Exit via the bookshop/café if desired. Practical Tips Grab a free map at the entrance and follow signs for “Collezione Farnese,” “Mosaici,” “Gabinetto Segreto,” and “Affreschi.” The museum is large — stick to this route to stay within 2–3 hours. Best time: weekday morning right after opening.
