Naples is energetic, chaotic, and full of character. One day is enough to experience the historic center, eat authentic pizza, and soak up the atmosphere. Focus on the Centro Storico — it’s compact and best explored on foot.
Morning: Historic Center (Centro Storico)
09:00 – Spaccanapoli & Gesù Nuovo
Start at Piazza del Gesù Nuovo.
Visit the striking Gesù Nuovo Church.
Explore the beautiful Cloister of Santa Chiara (majolica-tiled cloisters are a highlight).
10:00 – Spaccanapoli Walk
Wander this long, straight historic street that “splits” the old city.
Detour to Via San Gregorio Armeno (famous for nativity scene workshops — open year-round).
10:45 – Cappella Sansevero
See the extraordinary Veiled Christ sculpture.
Book a timed ticket in advance — this is one of the most popular sights and often sells out.
11:30 – Via dei Tribunali & Duomo
Continue along Via dei Tribunali (another ancient main street).
Visit the Duomo di Napoli (Cathedral) and the Chapel of San Gennaro if time allows.
Midday: Pizza Time
12:30–14:00 – Classic Neapolitan Pizza
This is non-negotiable in Naples. Recommended spots (expect queues):
L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele
Gino Sorbillo
Da Attilio or other highly rated local pizzerias
Order a classic Margherita or Marinara.
Afternoon: Spanish Quarters & Waterfront
14:30 – Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarters)
Wander the lively, narrow streets full of local life, street art, and the famous Maradona murals.
15:30 – Piazza del Plebiscito & Galleria Umberto I
See the grand Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace.
Walk through the elegant Galleria Umberto I shopping arcade.
Optional: If you prefer views, take the funicular or metro up to Castel Sant’Elmo / Vomero for panoramic views over the city and Bay of Naples (including Vesuvius).
Evening
17:30 onward
Stroll the Lungomare (seafront promenade) toward Castel dell’Ovo.
Enjoy an aperitivo with views of the bay.
Dinner: more pizza, seafood, or traditional Neapolitan dishes.
Practical Tips
Walking: Most of the day is on foot in the historic center. Wear comfortable shoes.
Must-book: Cappella Sansevero (Veiled Christ) — reserve online as early as possible.
Safety: Keep an eye on belongings in crowded areas (pickpocketing can occur). The city is generally safe for daytime sightseeing.
Transport: Metro Line 1 is useful if you go up to Vomero. Otherwise, everything central is walkable.
Food tip: Besides pizza, try sfogliatella (pastry) for breakfast or a quick street snack.
